OppShop's Thrift Shop Day – BCTV

by Opportunity House

OppShop celebrates Thrift Shop Day on Saturday, August 17, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

OppShop is a thrift store owned by Opportunity House. The store is located at 3045 5th St. Highway in Muhlenberg Township and is open five days a week.

Thrift Shop Day focuses on the benefits of secondhand shopping and its impact on the community, including:

  • Waste diversion from landfills
  • preserve sustainable fashion
  • Providing affordable furniture, appliances, household goods, clothing, books and media
  • Promoting creativity in the reuse of furniture and clothing
  • Raising funds for Opportunity House

At OppShop, secondhand retail is part of our mission to provide families in need with access to affordable items to furnish their homes, clothe their families, and entertain children and adults.

The reasons people shop at OppShop are as varied as the shoppers themselves. For some, it's about saving money and staying within their budget. Today, many secondhand shoppers shop to express their concern for the environment. They make a conscious effort to reduce their carbon footprint. Reusing and repurposing items helps them achieve their goals. Avid collectors love finding pieces to add to their collection. Whether they're collecting old glassware or unique books, secondhand stores are a great place to find those hard-to-find treasures. DIYers enjoy the challenge of turning an outdated piece into a new, stylish accessory for your home.

Nostalgia also plays a big role in thrift store shopping. For many, seeing an item from their childhood or an item that reminds them of a loved one is rewarding. Finding a treasure from years gone by gives shoppers comfort. When you shop at thrift stores, you can find vintage items, antiques, and collectibles from every decade.

OppShop is unique in its extensive product range, which includes furniture, homewares, books, media, appliances and seasonal decorations. In addition to used items, OppShop often sells new items. Vendors offer these items as an alternative to disposal when orders are cancelled or items are returned.

At OppShop, all proceeds from our secondhand retail business benefit Opportunity House. In fiscal year 2024, our efforts diverted £1,041,000 from landfills.

This event is part of Opportunity House's year-long celebration of 40th anniversary. Since 1984, Opportunity House has provided emergency shelter to over 500 homeless people each year.
