The caribou season in zones one and four ends on August 16

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) – According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game: The State of Alaska fall registration hunt (RC860) for Fortymile caribou in Zone 1, accessible via Steese Highway and Chena Hot Springs Road, and Zone 4, White Mountains, will close at 11:59 p.m. on August 16, 2024. Harvest has been consistent since the season began on August 11, and the quota of 195 for Zones 1 and 4 combined is expected to be reached at the time of this closure.

The state hunting season is scheduled to remain open in Zones 2 and 3. RC860 permits are available online at and in person in Tok, Delta Junction, Eagle, Fairbanks, Central, Douglas, Anchorage and Palmer.

Hunters are reminded to call the Fortymile Caribou Herd Hotline (907) 267-2310 before heading into the field to check the hunting quota and release limit and to be informed of any zone closures.

These hunting seasons and harvest quotas apply only to the federal caribou hunt in these areas. Hunters with questions about federal subsistence regulations should call (800) 474-2200.

Successful hunters must report online at (), by phone (907-883-2971), or in person at the ADF&G office in Tok within three days of the kill. Hunters who report by phone must also mail their permit reports or drop them off at the ADF&G office in Tok. Unsuccessful hunters and those who did not hunt must report online at or mail their reports to the Tok office by October 15, 2024.

Hunters are urged to obtain a receipt when submitting their hunt reports or to mail them via delivery confirmation. Permit holders who fail to report will be ineligible to obtain permits (draw, directed hunt, Tier II or registration, including Tier I Nelchina caribou) in the next regulatory year and may be subject to penalties.
