LEXINGTON – Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Lexington Police Chief Michael McLean have confirmed that the investigation into the case of a toddler who died in Lexington on Tuesday is currently ongoing.

At around 5:30 p.m., Lexington police responded to a daycare parking lot on Massachusetts Avenue for a report of an unresponsive toddler in his mother's vehicle. Upon arrival, the child, who would have turned 1 on August 31, was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to preliminary investigations, it can be assumed that the child did not enter the daycare center on the day of his death and may have spent a longer time in the car.

According to Boston 25 News, the daycare did an attendance check around 9:00 a.m. and sent the mother a message, but they never heard from her again. The mother arrived at the daycare to pick up her son at 5:20 p.m. and, after speaking with staff, ran back to the car and found the baby unresponsive.

The case has been referred to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, who will determine the cause and manner of death.

This is an active and ongoing investigation being conducted by the Middlesex District Attorney's Office, the Massachusetts Division of Criminal Investigation under the Attorney General's Office, and the Lexington Police Department.
