I just learned that our number one movie of the 2000s is getting an HBO sequel series, and I couldn't be more excited

Not long ago, my colleagues and I spent a lot of time evaluating the 100 best films of the 2000sa list that was crowned (spoiler alert!) by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund’s 2002 crime epic, City of GodThis film, which We gave a five-star ratingchanged my life quite a bit and introduced me to world cinema in high school, so you can imagine how excited I was when I found out that HBO was making a sequel series that would be in theaters soon.

Starting August 25, anyone with HBO or a Max subscription will be able to check City of God: The battle rages ona series that picks up years after the events of the groundbreaking film and shows us what Alexandre Rodrigues' Rocket has been up to since we last saw him.

Although I am a little disappointed that I did not put two and two together when I TV schedule 2024I can honestly say that my excitement outweighs any shame and I can't wait to watch it.

City Of God: The Fight Rages On picks up two decades after the 2002 film

From what I have read about the show and from the City of God: The battle rages on TrailerPicking up two decades after the events of the original film, we follow Wilson “Rocket” Rodrigues as a professional photojournalist (remember, that was a big part of the film). As he returns to his old stomping grounds to photograph everyone from drug dealers to politicians to cops to protestors, it sounds like Rocket is in for a treat in his old home.

I can't wait to go back to the favela and see what Rocket did there.

Even if the favela in City of God Although this seems to be the definition of “hell on earth” and a place I personally would never want to visit, I am still excited for the sequel series that takes us back to the deadly, drug-infested and bustling slums of the Rio de Janeiro suburb of Cidade de Deus.

As portrayed in Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund's film based on Paulo Lins' novel of the same name, the favela was as culturally rich and diverse as it was violent and full of life and death. This duality of the place, much like Rocket's existence within its borders, made City of God so exciting back then.

Speaking of Rocket, I can’t wait to see how his life will unfold in the 20 years between City of God And The battle rages on. He is no longer the young, idealistic teenager who tries to escape the slums only to find himself in the middle of a gang war. I am curious to see how the experiences of his youth and his current adult life have shaped him.

Although I have some concerns about the series, such as the fact that cinematographer César Charlone has not returned for the series, I am more than excited to see what the creative team behind City of God: The battle rages on has in store for you.
