Video shows suspected mountain lion family on hiking trail in San Francisco's East Bay region

On Monday morning, what appeared to be a family of mountain lions was spotted at Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park, KGO reports. A runner filmed the lions where the Courdet Trail meets the Ridge Line Trail. The video was shot by a certain Dovar Desancic, who was jogging on the trail Monday morning. He said he shot the video around 6:15 a.m. Desancic said he didn't hear the mountain lions, he just suddenly saw them. We asked him if he felt threatened, since we're not talking about one or two mountain lions, but four. Desancic told us he didn't feel threatened, since they were about 150 yards away. They didn't stop, either. He said it appeared there were three young lions and one older one. Desancic thought that was their mother. We showed the mountain lion video to hikers, some of whom had seen mountain lions before, but never a group or family in the wild. “If I was the one taking the video, I definitely would have thought, OK, this is a little spooky. I think it was kind of off because we had just hiked this trail, so it was kind of cool to see where we had just been and then see the lions,” said a hiker named Camille. “I just think it's great that there is this type of wildlife in the Bay Area. They're not usually dangerous if you stay away from them,” said another hiker named Danny. We reached out to staff at East Bay Regional Parks, California Fish and Wildlife and Pleasanton Police to see if they knew about the group of mountain lions. Everyone knows there are mountain lions in the park areas, but the people we spoke to didn't know about the apparent family. Experts say mountain lions are calm, quiet and elusive most of the time, but if you see one, stay calm, stop or back away slowly. Do not approach or run from a mountain lion. As KGO reports, a family of mountain lions was spotted in Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park on Monday morning.

Afterwards, a runner took a video of the lions at the point where the Courdet Trail meets the Ridge Line Trail.

The video was shot by a man named Dovar Desancic, who was jogging on the trail on Monday morning. He said he took the video around 6:15 a.m. Desancic said he didn't hear the mountain lions, but just suddenly saw them.

We asked him if he felt threatened, as we were talking about four cougars, not one or two. Desancic told us he did not feel threatened, as they were about 150 meters away. They did not stop either. He said it appeared there were three young lions and one older one. Desancic thought that was their mother. We showed the video of the cougars to hikers, some of whom had seen cougars before, but never a group or family of them in the wild.

“I just think it's great that there is this kind of wildlife in the Bay Area. They're usually not dangerous if you stay away from them,” said another hiker named Danny.

We reached out to staff at East Bay Regional Parks, California Fish and Wildlife and the Pleasanton Police Department to see if they were aware of the mountain lion group. Everyone knows there are mountain lions in the park areas, but the people we spoke to were unaware of the apparent family.

Experts say mountain lions are calm, silent and elusive most of the time. However, if you see one, stay calm, stay in place or back away slowly. Do not approach or run away from a mountain lion.
