Nicolas Cage is probably not the first actor fans imagine in the role of legendary football coach and sportscaster John Madden. But the Oscar winner has actually been cast in the role of Madden in a biopic, reports Deadline.

Madden's story is a compelling one: He started out as a coach, leading the Oakland Raiders to Super Bowl victory, only to leave the profession after 10 seasons due to health issues. He then became a sportscaster and became arguably the best sports game analyst of all time, winning 16 Sports Emmy Awards and becoming a cultural icon. Madden died in 2021 at the age of 85.

However, according to the Hollywood Reporter, this film project will be about the origins of the hugely successful video game series “Madden NFL”.

Madden was asked by game developer Electronic Arts to be the face, voice and creative consultant for its multiplayer video game that uses the names and characteristics of real NFL players. The gameplay has influenced the way football is televised and explained to viewers, in large part due to Madden's input.

Madden NFL was launched in 1988 and has become an important part of the football fan experience, with players constantly commenting on whether or not their skills are accurately represented in the game.

The film is directed by David O. Russell, whose films include “Silver Linings Playbook,” “American Hustle,” and the more conventional sports biopic about boxer Micky Ward, “The Fighter.”

Will Ferrell was one of the actors previously considered for the role of Madden in Russell's film. Hugh Jackman was later rumored to play Madden. Tom Hanks has reportedly expressed interest in playing Raiders owner Al Davis.

According to Deadline, a competing Madden project is also in the works. It is a limited TV series directed by Gavin O'Connor (“Miracle,” “Warrior”) and with Tom Brady's production company also involved.

Brady's involvement was reportedly important in gaining the Madden family's approval. Those interested in learning more about Madden's coaching and broadcasting careers may find more information here.
