Katy Perry: Video Vanguard Award at the VMAs

MTV has announced that singer Katy Perry will receive the 2024 Video Vanguard Award at the VMAs for her career achievements in music videos. She follows in the footsteps of other Vanguards, including MichaelJackson, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Rihanna And Missy ElliottAs part of the celebration of her video performance, Perry will also perform live during the televised event on September 11.

“Katy is a musical powerhouse and a true pop culture icon. Her groundbreaking creative vision has made her a global phenomenon and she has conquered the biggest stages in the world. Katy's talent will be on full display at the VMAs with an unforgettable, career-spanning performance that celebrates her biggest moments and chart hits,” said Bruce GillmerPresident of Music, Music Talent, Programming and Events, Paramount and Chief Content Officer, Music, Paramount+.

Perry has won five VMAs in her career: Video of the Year for “Firework” (2011), Best Collaboration and Best Special Effects for “ET” featuring Kanye West (2011), Best Art Direction for “Wide Awake” (2012) and Best Female Video for “Dark Horse” featuring Juicy J (2014). Her most recent nomination was for Best Cinematography for Harleys in Hawaii (2020).

Her seventh studio album, “143,” is due to be released on September 20. However, preparations for this release have not gone entirely smoothly. The album's first single, “Woman's World,” was criticized for the involvement of the co-writer/producer. Dr. Lukaswho was accused of sexual abuse by KeshaThen another single, “Lifetimes,” was accompanied by a music video that was investigated for environmental damage. Perhaps the Video Vanguard Award and accompanying performance will put their musical comeback back on track.
