The race to East Lake is officially on, as the 2024 FedEx Cup Playoffs begin this week in Memphis at the 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship. TPC Southwind, which welcomes the top 70 players from the regular season, will once again serve as the host venue for the first postseason event.

While qualifying for the playoffs is an accomplishment in itself, players have the opportunity to make their 2025 season a success if they make it to the next round. With the field reduced from 70 to 50 players, the St. Jude Championship is the last chance for some to play their way into next week's BMW Championship and ultimately next year's major events.

Those currently watching from the outside include Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose, Mine Woo Lee and reigning FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland. The Norwegian, who will play as defending champion for the next two weeks, is in danger of not being able to compete to defend his titles in the postseason. If not them, who could surprise as a sleeper and run away to East Lake?

In his place, world number one and Olympic gold medalist Scottie Scheffler sits atop the FedEx Cup standings. Scheffler holds a sizable lead over Xander Schauffele and Rory McIlroy, and will look to extend his lead and enter the Tour Championship as the top name for the third year in a row.

Other candidates who could dethrone Scheffler ahead of East Lake (given the 4x FedEx Cup points multiplier in the playoffs) include Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Åberg, Sahith Theegala, Patrick Cantlay and Tony Finau, all of whom are winless this season.
