Martin criticizes “irresponsible” leaks about Bella-Kotchap's heart health

Reports from the 22-year-old's home country suggested that a permanent transfer to Hoffenheim could be in jeopardy due to a “heart problem”.

Martin stressed that the club has known for some time that Bella-Kotchap had undergone standard heart surgery and that there was no immediate threat to his health.

The head coach added that Bella-Kotchap is doing well and hopes the £12.8million transfer to bring the Germany international back to the Bundesliga goes ahead.

Ahead of Southampton's Premier League opener against Newcastle United, Martin said: “He is at Hoffenheim and things are progressing.”

“Armel, because it's about the heart, is probably an even scarier story than it is. He's had a completely normal procedure. They're going to examine him and do further tests.

“It never really caused him any problems. We all have known this for some time and I expect and hope for Armel that everything will be fine and it will happen.”

Martin continued: “Armel is fine, completely fine. I think it's a really good deal for everyone involved, so I hope for him, for us and for Hoffenheim that everything will work out.”

“If not, we will reassess the situation and come back here – but there is no immediate threat to Armel and his health and safety and all that.”

“I think it's a little irresponsible how this was allowed to leak and come out without context and details because it does the player no favors at all.”
