Spectrum is warning its customers about two scams that were recently reported to the company. One of the scams involves an offer for a discount on paying a bill, and the second is a romance scam.

The company says its customers have been receiving offers for a bill discount. Some offer 40% off their Spectrum bill if they use gift cards or credit cards. The company says this is a scam and is not offered by the company.

The second scam that Spectrum says is taking place is a romance scam, where the scammer creates a fake online identity to gain trust and then asks for personal information such as social security number, bank account and other details.

Scammers typically contact their potential victims via text message and/or phone call and leave a voicemail pretending to be Spectrum and stating that they have provided a discount on your bill. The scammer then asks you to call a phone number to retain the discount offer.

“When you call this number, you will be greeted by someone claiming to be a genuine Spectrum employee who will ask you for the cell phone number to which the text message or call was sent and your account information.”

According to Spectrum.

The scammer then contacts Spectrum customer service themselves, impersonating you and asking for your account balance. The scammer then says that in order to receive the “discount” one must purchase a gift card at any convenience store. If the potential victim agrees to purchase the gift card, they receive a text message with instructions on how to provide the gift card information to a “third party”. After the information is provided, the scammer deducts the cash amount from the card and the victim loses the amount they loaded onto the gift card.
