Trent Williams and 49ers make no ‘significant changes’ to contract – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

In recent months, the contract dispute surrounding Brandon Aiyuk has understandably dominated the NFL headlines.

But these are not the only economic problems the 49ers are currently struggling with.

Trent Williams – arguably the more important asset for San Francisco's offense – is also holding back during training camp as he seeks a new contract.

Currently, Williams and the 49ers have not made much progress in their negotiations, Dianna Russini, NFL insider at The Athletic, reported on Monday.

“Trent Williams is still holding back and still hasn't gotten the guaranteed money he's looking for,” Russini revealed on the “Scoop City” podcast. “He's still in that area. As far as I know, there hasn't been any significant changes there.”

It's possible that the 49ers are prioritizing talks with Aiyuk at this point, which has resulted in little progress with their star left tackle.

Ultimately, Williams has not gone as far as demanding a transfer like his receiver teammate. Coach Kyle Shanahan has also expressed confidence that he can negotiate a deal with the 36-year-old, whose current contract still has three years to run but no longer has a guaranteed salary.

Likewise, Russini seems optimistic that San Francisco can get the NFL's best offensive tackle under control.

“I think it will be resolved. It needs to be resolved for the San Francisco 49ers,” Russini claimed. “They need Trent Williams.”

The solution to the Williams-Aiyuk contract saga could simply come down to who the 49ers think they need more – and that's anything but an easy decision.
