Dates announced for the return of the York Christmas Market

The dates for the return of the award-winning York Christmas Market have been announced by Make it York.

The city's visitor promotion organisation says the market's 75 famous alpine chalets will line Parliament Street and St Sampson's Square from November 14 to December 22.

The event promises a festive wonderland of local vendors and artisan products and also includes a vintage carousel on Königsplatz.

York Christmas Market won the Best Large Speciality Market category at the Great British Market Awards organised by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA), a prize the city shared with Stratford-upon-Avon.

According to Make it York, the Christmas market shows the city at its best and is a great example of how both residents and visitors support Yorkshire-based businesses. Around 80% of the traders this year are Yorkshire-based businesses, including street food and the traditional mulled wine offerings.

The funding committee continued that considering ecological sustainability and accessibility is a top priority every year.

To ensure a positive environmental and social impact, preference was given to retailers who produce sustainably. These retailers are committed to ethical practices, use environmentally friendly materials and support fair standards.

By prioritizing these issues, Make it York says it aims to promote a more responsible and conscious market that benefits everyone.

Like last year, the market will have a quieter time every day from 10am to 12pm so that visitors can enjoy the atmosphere without music and with fewer people.

The virtual market is back and allows visitors to plan their visit in advance. Visitors can easily find the chalets in advance and plan their route for convenient access.

Participation in the “Take a Seat” initiative also allows those in need to rest. The aim of the initiative is to make the city more accessible to older people who have limited mobility but still want to get out and do something.

Make it York also says that ensuring safety is always at the forefront and standard measures are in place. This year, that includes taking part in the Safe Space Scheme, a community of businesses that provide a safe place for women to go if they feel threatened in any way.

Other considerations for the market include encouraging visitors to use the online restroom map finder when looking for a restroom.

For trips into the city centre, public transport is always preferred, including York Park & Ride, which offers regular services into the city from its six locations.

Sarah Loftus, Managing Director of Make It York, said: “We are delighted to announce the return of our award-winning Christmas Market! The team are working hard to implement numerous measures to ensure a wonderful and inclusive experience for all. We always strive to create a festive atmosphere that everyone can enjoy.”
