On3 makes predictions about the winner of the starting quarterback job in the UNC football program

The quarterback competition in Chapel Hill is catching everyone’s attention.

While Mack Brown and the UNC football program are still working to determine who will play quarterback in the team's season opener at Minnesota, the world is waiting to see who will be first in line to get the chance to replace star quarterback Drake Maye.

Three quarterbacks are vying for the job, but the competition will likely be narrowed down to just two: Max Johnson and Conner Harrell.

On3's Jesse Simonton took a look at the most exciting battles for the starting quarterback position taking place across the country and made a prediction as to who will secure the job in the UNC football program.

“Chapel Hill may have the toughest battle for the 2024 quarterback position. Criswell, a former Tar Heel who went to Arkansas before returning to UNC, was brought in after spring practice – suggesting Mack Brown wasn't too happy with his current options at quarterback – but word is that the boomerang transfer isn't a serious option for the job at this time.

The battle between Johnson and Harrell, who started in the Dukes' Mayo Bowl game but struggled with two picks, has yet to produce a named starter. Johnson has a big advantage in experience (and his ability to protect the ball), but Harrell can challenge opponents with his legs and offers more upside.

Forecast: Johnson gets the nod in Week 1 on the road at Minnesota, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see multiple quarterbacks (perhaps all three if Criswell gets into shape midseason) start a game this fall.”

While Simonton believes Johnson will start in the season opener, he also believes Tar Heels fans will see Harrell and maybe even Jacolby Criswell at some point this season.

As Simonton noted, Johnson has the edge in terms of college experience, but Harrell offers more athleticism and potential for the future.

It will be interesting to see how this battle plays out, as there are many factors to consider. The strength of the offensive line could play a big role in the decision, as Brown and his team may opt for the more mobile Harrell if they believe the new offensive line can't keep up. If they show throughout training camp that they can be a consistently stable unit, Johnson could lose that job.

We will still be several weeks away from a decision, as there will be a lot of talk about the starting quarterback job in the UNC football program leading up to the final decision.
