School may be starting in Texas, but August is going to be even hotter!

As a heat dome gathers over the Lone Star State, meteorologists warn that this week and next are likely to be the hottest of 2024. Heat advisories are in effect for much of the state, triple-digit temperatures are expected, and heat indices could rise to 110 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas.

But heat is nothing new for Texans, especially after record-breaking temperatures earlier this summer and no signs of a lasting cooling. So how does the heat in Texas compare to other states? Here's what the data shows.

Texas is No. 4 for the highest average temperature

So far this year, the Lone Star has the fourth-highest average temperature among U.S. states. Data collected through Wednesday shows the average temperature in Texas is 65.5°F (18.4°C)—which may not sound so bad right now until you consider counting the January days when it snowed in North Texas.

LIST: Top 10 hottest states

Only Florida, Hawaii and Louisiana have higher average temperatures than Texas in 2024, according to data collected by The Blogler. Arizona and Arkansas are tied for ninth highest at 62.5°F.

LIST: Top 5 coldest states

On the other end of the spectrum, it's no surprise that Alaska has its lowest average temperature yet this year. During the winter season, from October to April, the average temperature is 28.1°F—over 10 degrees below the second coldest state, North Dakota.
