On August 8, 2024, at approximately 9:44 a.m., the Carroll County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a physical domestic altercation at a residence on Highway 24 in rural DeWitt. The incident involved an out-of-control male who had assaulted family members and caused significant property damage. The suspect fled the scene before police arrived, but returned when a deputy attended.

Upon his return, a pursuit began, but due to road conditions, officers lost sight of the suspect as he continued to drive recklessly. The suspect attempted to return to the original crime scene on foot, but an officer was there ready to arrest him. A foot pursuit ensued, and with the assistance of a canine unit, the suspect was located in a wooded area north of Highway 24, west of County Road 381.

The suspect, identified as Richard “Richie” Tietjens of DeWitt, was taken into custody at 12:52 p.m. and subsequently transported to a hospital for evaluation. A motion for formal charges has been filed with the Carroll County District Attorney's Office.

The Carroll County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Chariton County Sheriff's Office, the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Brookfield Police Canine Unit.
