If you asked 100 interior designers for their opinion on wallpaper in bathrooms, you would get 100 different answers. Fortunately, Justin and Hailey Bieber aren't afraid of a little controversy. The couple's bathroom walls are completely covered in yellow, white and green wallpaper.

We first spotted the bathroom wallpaper in one of Hailey's Instagram posts (slides 2 and 5) and haven't been able to stop thinking about it since. The Biebers' interior designer expertly paired their classic floral wallpaper with crisp white tile and paneling. An ornate rug and vintage chair on the vanity add a sense of history. The entire space has an alluring, French antique feel.

“The bathroom is a great place to experiment with a boldly printed wallpaper,” says Jennifer Ebert, color expert and digital editor at Houses & Gardens. “Because these areas tend to be smaller than other rooms in the house, the wallpaper creates a cozy, intentionally designed atmosphere rather than being overwhelming.”

She continues, “In Justin and Hailey Bieber's bathroom, the classic floral wallpaper in yellow, white and green adds a touch of playfulness to the bathroom walls. I love how they used the wallpaper on both the ceiling and walls to create a unified, all-encompassing look that makes you feel like you're stepping into a floral forest. This look would look beautiful with a freestanding bathtub or other contemporary furnishings that enhance the vintage look.”

However, the controversy surrounding this type of wall decoration is not unfounded. Since wallpaper is made of paper, it can be difficult to maintain in a high-moisture area like the bathroom. In fact, some experts say that the bathroom is one of the places you should never put wallpaper if you want to have a low-maintenance home.

While these risks can never be completely eliminated, they can be mitigated with careful planning. Chelsea Clark, expert at I Love Wallpaper, advises: “It's best to avoid wallpapering in areas where there are frequent splashes, such as around a bath or shower, and ensure the room is well ventilated to prevent the wallpaper from peeling off.” If these precautions are taken, there are hundreds of examples of successfully wallpapered bathrooms and powder rooms.

She recommends, “A no-fuss, budget-conscious alternative is faux-textured wallpaper, which offers the same designer look for less money. Since bathrooms have a lot of moisture, choose a wallpaper with a vinyl coating or a scrub-resistant finish that is extra durable.”

Although bathroom wallpaper is controversial, Hailey and Justin Bieber's bathroom design is proof that it can pay off when done right.
